Preview Match : Antigua & Barbuda crashed out of Group D in the Under-23 Olympic 2012 Qualifiers football competition following back-to-back defeats to Haiti and host St Kitts & Nevis over the last three days. Antigua & Barbuda went down 2-1 to Haiti on Thursday in their opening contest with the lone strike coming from striker Stephan Smith.
Smith’s 27th minute conversion drew Antigua & Barbuda level at 1-1 after Haiti had taken the lead in minute two following a strike from Charles Harold. The decisive goal came in minute 48 from Guerrier Wilde Donald to lift Haiti past Antigua & Barbuda.
On Saturday, the Antiguans suffered a similar fate, going down 2-1 to hosts St Kitts & Nevis. Smith was, once again, the lone goal-scorer for Antigua & Barbuda. Technical Director Tom Curtis said the squad gave a good account in the opening game but felt they under-achieved against the hosts.
“The team played well in the first game but I felt we could have played better in the game against St Kitts & Nevis. We did play better in the second half than we did in the first but our first match was better,” he said.
Curtis, who is also head coach of Antigua Barracuda FC, said also that the team was hampered by the exclusion of some experienced players.
“We did not have the services of Molvin James who is unavailable at the moment, while midfielder Quinton Griffith is injured and has not been able to play; but we are hoping to end on a good note when we play St Lucia on Monday,” he said.
